How to start prepping your skin for winter

With the relief from the scorching summer weather and the cooler temperatures settling in across the country, it’s time to face facts: winter is here. While the changing seasons can bring with it the novelty of winter fashion and warming beverages (chai lattes, anyone?) it can also present a fair few challenges for your skin.

A number of people find that as winter comes around, their radiant summer complexion is slowly taken over by dry, dull skin, but this doesn’t have to be the case!   To help you prepare for winter, the Ultraceuticals team has put together some top tips to take care of your skin.

Step up your moisturising game

In order to prevent your skin from suffering during the cooler months, your summer moisturising routine will most likely need a few tweaks. A heavier moisturiser such as the Ultra Rich Moisturiser Cream might be in order to help retain vital hydration and support your skin’s barrier function. With Essential Fatty Acids, Ceramides and our unique Advanced Moisturising Complex, this moisture-rich formula helps to nourish and repair skin, providing all-day hydration for a smooth complexion.

Humectants, such as Hyaluronic Acid, which actively attract moisture to your skin are another winter lifesaver. Our Ultra B2 Hydrating Serum contains Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) and Hyaluronic Acid (capable of holding up to 1,000 times its own weight in water), as well as Provitamin B5 to plump up the skin for a more dewy, hydrated complexion.

Tracey Beeby, Ultraceuticals Global Education Ambassador explains her top tips for combating dehydration caused by the winter elements.
“Apply a hydration booster underneath your moisturiser and consider taking a step up in the intensity of your moisturiser as well. Stay hydrated internally by drinking lots of water and avoid positioning your face directly under the shower. Always remember to keep your skin protected with both an antioxidant and sunscreen – even in winter. The use of a nourishing and hydrating mask like Ultra Replenishing Mask can also help. Don’t forget to exfoliate too, as those dead skin cells can clog and prevent skin from properly absorbing much needed moisture.”

Combat the warmth

If your home or workplace tends to crank up the indoor heating during winter, you’ll likely find your skin feeling dry or uncomfortably tight. One way to help prevent your skin from drying out is to use a humidifier which can restore the moisture to the air. Placing a few of these throughout your home can help to ensure a moisture-rich environment that is kinder to your skin.

Nourishing Cleansers

To help maintain optimum moisture levels in your skin, our Ultra Hydrating Milk Cleanser removes make-up and daily debris while nourishing the skin with Vitamin E and Grape Seed Oil.

Don’t forget your sunscreen

Just because you’re not hitting the beach and basking in the warm sun this winter, doesn’t mean that you should forget about sun protection altogether. While it may not feel sweltering hot, the winter sun can still do plenty of damage. UVA rays are present all year round and are the main contributing factor for accelerated ageing.

If you are heading to the snow, sun glare can be a serious concern, with levels of UV radiation higher in alpine regions as reported by the Victorian government’s Better Health Channel.

Our Ultra UV Protective Daily Moisturiser Range combines essential moisture with SPF to ensure you’re taking care of your skin in the winter months.

Ask for advice

Last but certainly not least, if you’re concerned about your skin with winter around the corner, you can book a consultation with one of our highly-trained skin technicians. They’ll be able to assess the state of your skin and suggest a specific strategy to keep your complexion looking fresh and healthy all winter long.

If you have specific concerns such as facial redness, or dry, flaky skin, a skin technician can also help to recommend products for your specific skin type. So before you jump into choosing your winter skincare products, be sure to book your consultation first.
